Meet Victoria Lan - An Amazing Kid!

Victoria Lan is truly an amazing kid who believes in developing and sharing the talents that she considers gifts from her Father in Heaven.

Born in Victoria, BC to parents who had emigrated from Taiwan, Victoria Lan learned English while attending Nursery and Primary. She started taking piano lessons at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and swimming lessons at Saanich Commonwealth Place when she was four. At age eight, she achieved Red Cross Level 12, joined the Island Swim Club, and was baptized a member of the Church.

Following the principle, “Honour thy father and thy mother,” (Matthew 19:19), Victoria has kept the daily schedule that her parents arranged for her: before and after school swim practice, daytime school, evening piano practice and then homework. She also found the time to participate in Young Women's activities and Youth Temple trips.

According to Gospel admonitions to develop all her talents, Victoria regularly participated in piano summer school and travelled throughout BC to participate in summer swim meets, where she earned 14 gold, three silver and three bronze medals, as well as 67 first-place ribbons in the Vancouver Island Regional Swim Championships and the BC Provincial Swim meets. When she celebrated her 17th birthday, she received her National Lifeguard Service and Water Safety Instructor Certificates and has since started teaching young children to swim.

Victoria is also a straight “A” student enrolled in enriched high school courses. She completed Grade 10 Piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music and now teaches beginning students. Victoria has been a Vancouver Island Regional Spelling Bee Champion, a two-time Canadian finalist of the Children's World Map Competition, a three-time Piano Award recipient of the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, and a winner of the Greater Victoria Annual Story Writing Contest.

Because her grandfather and uncle died from cancer, Victoria is interested in pursuing university studies in medicine. Not only has she won a Genome BC Award in the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair, but also for many years she has volunteered at Royal Jubilee Hospital.

As Jesus Christ said, “Love thy neighbour as thyself,” (Matthew 22:39), Victoria loves to help others and her volunteer contributions are varied and frequent. On the July 1st weekend, she helped at Canadian Blood Services and the James Bay Community Market, as well as with the Green Team which included seven hours of picking up litter at the 'Victoria Celebrates Canada Day Event. Victoria takes great pride in the beautiful city she is named after and wants to keep its attractions bright for others. She cherishes her life in Canada, and treasures being in such a land of freedom and beauty.

Her neighbours were so impressed with Victoria’s accomplishments that they nominated her as a “Save-On-Foods Amazing Kid” for which she was recently presented with its award.
